Team Rules and Policies
Welcome to the DSG competitive team program. We have been competing with teams locally, regionally and nationally for 30 years! We continue to have one of the largest, most successful programs in the state. We have had 27 gymnasts receive gymnastics scholarships. We attribute this success to our philosophy of competitive gymnastics and to our fine staff. Please read the entire handout and keep it for future reference.
At DSG we believe competitive gymnastics should be the most exciting, positive experience these kids will get in their competitive sports careers. We strive to teach quality gymnastics in a positive environment. We want gymnastics to supplement their lives, not be their entire lives. Gymnastics is a short part of their overall life and we want them to leave our program with positive thoughts and skills that will carry over into their adult lives.
After 30 years we continue to have the same core staff. We carefully train all team staff members. We want to encourage communication between gymnasts, coaches and parents.
Compulsory levels (4-6) all routines are choreographed by USA Gymnastics.
Level 4 is the beginning of competition. Gymnasts can start level 4 as early as 6 years of age. Awards are based on achievement.
Level 5 is the 2nd level of compulsory gymnastics. There is a progression of skills at this level. Routines slightly increase in difficulty and awards are also based on achievement.
Level 6 is the 3rd and final level of compulsory gymnastics. Progression of skills continues and routines increase in difficulty. Traditional awards are given. Children range from age 8 on up.
Optional levels (7-10) The USAG gives required skills on each event, for each level, and gymnasts can perform their own individual routines. Skills are given a certain value (skills valued as an A are the easiest, B’s are more difficult, then C’s, D’s, and E’s).
Level 7 is the first level of the optional program. Level 7’s are required to have 5 A’s and 2 B’s on each event. There is a restriction in difficulty of vaults allowed at this level.
Levels 8-10 are advanced optional levels. Skills continue to increase in difficulty. Progression of skills continues throughout each level.
Score Requirements to move to the next level.
Level 4 – Level 5 31.0 in the All-Around
Level 5 – Level 6 31.0 in the All-Around
Level 6 – Level 7 31.0 in the All-Around
Level 7 – Level 8 33.0 in the All-Around
Level 8 – Level 9/10 34.0 in the All-Around
In addition to having the required score the gymnasts must be able to do all required skills at the next level. Most gymnasts spend 2-3 years at both the optional and compulsory levels.
We communicate to our team parents by weekly e-mail newsletters and information being posted on the board in the gym. Please check the board every practice to make sure you have all the current information.
Levels 4, 5 and 6 – The competitive season is August through December. Each gymnast will have the opportunity to participate in 5-6 meets to qualify to their sectional or state meets. To qualify to sectional or state championships the gymnast must achieve a certain score set by the Colorado USAG board. All the sectional meet gymnasts qualify to the state championship by scoring in the top All-Around scorers.
We also compete in the Rocky Mountain League during April and May, 4 meets costing $30 each.
Levels 7, 8, 9 and 10 – The competitive season runs January through May.
Level 7 – ends with the state championship. The board sets a qualifying score the gymnast must achieve to make it to the state championship. If necessary, a sectional meet will take place.
Level 8 – Qualify to State and Regional competitions.
Level 9 – Qualify to State, Regional and Western Nationals.
Level 10 – Qualify to State, Regional and National Championships.
Level 4, 5 and 6 – Entry fees range from $45.00 to $65.00 per meet with 5-6 regular meets available.
Level 7-10 – Entry fees range from $60.00 to $100.00 per meet with 5-6 regular meets available.
Entry fees will include the coaching costs at that meet.
Championship meets are separate and usually cost a little more.
Uniforms range from $150.00 to $200.00
USAG Insurance: $50.00 per year due in July.
DSG Team Fee: $125.00 due June 1st (Levels 4-10).
DSG Annual Insurance Fee: $25.00 per year due April 1st.
T-shirts at championship meets - $15.00, Flowers - $10.00 (optional)
Level 7-10 – In addition to entry fees, levels 7-10 have the option of 1-2 out of state meets during the regular season. The cost of out of state travel includes entry fees, a portion of hotels, car rental, airfare and coaching fees. Each trip runs approximately $500.00-$600.00 and that does not include food, shopping or extracurricular activities.
In addition to those costs, these is the cost for state, regional or national competitions. If your child is the only qualified gymnast it could be costly due to coaching fees.
We do have a booster club that is available to all team members that assists with paying for the high costs of competitive gymnastics. The booster club runs different programs throughout the year to raise money. The number of members determines how often you need to work. The booster club tries to pay for:
1) Entry fees
2) T-Shirts
3) All traveling expenses
4) USAG fees
5) Uniforms
6) Team fees
This might be something of interest and could be very beneficial to you.
We try to keep these to a minimum and handle all problems that arise.
1) Team is a 12-month a year program. Tuition is due every month. We do not prorate tuition unless the gymnast is sick or injured for more than 2 months.
2) Gymnasts must attend practice consistently in order to compete.
3) All injuries must be brought to the attention of the coaches.
4) All rules must be followed during traveling trips, NO exceptions!
5) Girls are in charge of bringing their floor music to every meet.
6) We have weekly requirement for the girls to meet in order to compete.
7) When any problems arise we ask that it be dealt with in a manner that is respectful to all parties involved. If possible set up a meeting in advance. Try to solve all problems in a timely manner so they don’t get worse than they need to be.
8) Please try to communicate with the coaches after practice or during the day, not during practice.
9) No body piercing (except ears) or tattoos that show when wearing the team uniform are allowed.
10) Because of the heavy schedule of team workouts there are no team make-ups allowed unless the coaches arrange it.
